    Edge Electron Gas

The uniform electron gas, the traditional starting point for density-based many-body theories of inhomogeneous systems, is inappropriate near electronic edges. In its place we put forward the appropriate concept of the edge electron gas.Comment: 4 pages RevTex with 7 ps-figures included. Minor changes in title, text and figure

On approximating copulas by finite mixtures

Copulas are now frequently used to approximate or estimate multivariate distributions because of their ability to take into account the multivariate dependence of the variables while controlling the approximation properties of the marginal densities. Copula based multivariate models can often also be more parsimonious than fitting a flexible multivariate model, such as a mixture of normals model, directly to the data. However, to be effective, it is imperative that the family of copula models considered is sufficiently flexible. Although finite mixtures of copulas have been used to construct flexible families of copulas, their approximation properties are not well understood and we show that natural candidates such as mixtures of elliptical copulas and mixtures of Archimedean copulas cannot approximate a general copula arbitrarily well. Our article develops fundamental tools for approximating a general copula arbitrarily well by a mixture and proposes a family of finite mixtures that can do so. We illustrate empirically on a financial data set that our approach for estimating a copula can be much more parsimonious and results in a better fit than approximating the copula by a mixture of normal copulas.Comment: 26 pages and 1 figure and 2 table

    A generic multibody simulation

    Get PDF
Described is a dynamic simulation package which can be configured for orbital test scenarios involving multiple bodies. The rotational and translational state integration methods are selectable for each individual body and may be changed during a run if necessary. Characteristics of the bodies are determined by assigning components consisting of mass properties, forces, and moments, which are the outputs of user-defined environmental models. Generic model implementation is facilitated by a transformation processor which performs coordinate frame inversions. Transformations are defined in the initialization file as part of the simulation configuration. The simulation package includes an initialization processor, which consists of a command line preprocessor, a general purpose grammar, and a syntax scanner. These permit specifications of the bodies, their interrelationships, and their initial states in a format that is not dependent on a particular test scenario

    Mixed Marginal Copula Modeling

This article extends the literature on copulas with discrete or continuous marginals to the case where some of the marginals are a mixture of discrete and continuous components. We do so by carefully defining the likelihood as the density of the observations with respect to a mixed measure. The treatment is quite general, although we focus focus on mixtures of Gaussian and Archimedean copulas. The inference is Bayesian with the estimation carried out by Markov chain Monte Carlo. We illustrate the methodology and algorithms by applying them to estimate a multivariate income dynamics model.Comment: 46 pages, 8 tables and 4 figure

Spectrometer for Hard X-Ray Free Electron Laser Based on Diffraction Focusing

X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) generate sequences of ultra-short, spatially coherent pulses of x-ray radiation. We propose the diffraction focusing spectrometer (DFS), which is able to measure the whole energy spectrum of the radiation of a single XFEL pulse with an energy resolution of ΔE/E≈2×10−6\Delta E/E\approx 2\times 10^{-6}. This is much better than for most modern x-ray spectrometers. Such resolution allows one to resolve the fine spectral structure of the XFEL pulse. The effect of diffraction focusing occurs in a single crystal plate due to dynamical scattering, and is similar to focusing in a Pendry lens made from the metamaterial with a negative refraction index. Such a spectrometer is easier to operate than those based on bent crystals. We show that the DFS can be used in a wide energy range from 5 keV to 20 keV.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

Decoding the activity of neuronal populations in macaque primary visual cortex

    Get PDF
Visual function depends on the accuracy of signals carried by visual cortical neurons. Combining information across neurons should improve this accuracy because single neuron activity is variable. We examined the reliability of information inferred from populations of simultaneously recorded neurons in macaque primary visual cortex. We considered a decoding framework that computes the likelihood of visual stimuli from a pattern of population activity by linearly combining neuronal responses and tested this framework for orientation estimation and discrimination. We derived a simple parametric decoder assuming neuronal independence and a more sophisticated empirical decoder that learned the structure of the measured neuronal response distributions, including their correlated variability. The empirical decoder used the structure of these response distributions to perform better than its parametric variant, indicating that their structure contains critical information for sensory decoding. These results show how neuronal responses can best be used to inform perceptual decision-making
